Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

What is RPL?

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a process that acknowledges the learning achievements a person has acquired, typically allowing them to shorten the duration of their studies and facilitating the attainment of a degree or academic credential.

By offering RPL applicants the opportunity to demonstrate their prior learning, RPL helps optimize their academic journey by taking into account the unique aspects of their educational paths and their individual needs.

Types of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Academic Achievement:
Any RPL process includes a step to validate academic achievements earned at another institution. At the university level, this recognition takes the form of course or credit equivalencies.

Recognition of prior learning from experience (non-academic): This type of recognition is more complex to implement. At the college level, the process is well-structured, and the standards governing the design of assessment tools are established by the Ministry of Higher Education (MES, 2021b). At the university level, the recognition of experiential learning is developing but remains in a more embryonic stage than at the college level. Universities have the autonomy to develop their own RPL practices (Morrissette and Larochelle, 2021).
