Budget cuts in higher education

The Quebec Student Union condemns the Quebec government's austerity policies, particularly budget cuts in the higher education system.

→ July 2024: The Ministry of Higher Education announces the termination of the agreement to conduct an investigation into sexual violence in higher education institutions. That's $1.2 million cut!

→ Fall 2024: Canadian students who are not residents of Quebec see a 33% increase in their tuition fees. February 2025: The Ministry of Higher Education prematurely ends the Perspective Québec scholarships. That's $250 million stolen from students' pockets!

→ March 2025: The Quebec government presents a budget with no investment in universities. That's a $31.8 million budget cut!

→ June 2025: The Ministry of Higher Education cuts the Work-Study Program. Once again, the ministry fails to consult its committee on access to higher education. It cuts $3 million from a program that helps students in financial need.

In addition to all these announcements threatening access to higher education, the share of university funding contributed by students is increasing.

It is unacceptable to make students bear the brunt of the government's austerity measures!

On October 1, the UEQ and FECQ joined forces with MAGE UQAC and AGEECC to denounce the impact of government cuts on higher education institutions in Chicoutimi.
